Music, Justice, & Community
First Congregational Church Santa Barbara
For more than 150 years, First Congregational Church Santa Barbara has been a spiritual home rooted in the historic Congregationalist tradition and the wider movement of the United Church of Christ. Since its founding in the 1860s, FCCSB has sought to embody a Christianity centered in love, compassion, justice, and thoughtful faith — a community where people are encouraged to bring both their spirituality and their questions.
Today, FCCSB is part of Kin Commons — helping grow a contemplative and justice-centered spiritual community grounded in the belief that all are kin.

As a congregation in the United Church of Christ, FCCSB holds a deep commitment to openness, inclusion, and freedom of conscience. We believe faith is not about uniformity or certainty, but about walking together in love, curiosity, humility, and shared transformation. Our congregation includes people from many backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences, united not by rigid agreement, but by a shared desire to cultivate compassion and community.
FCCSB is and has been proudly Open and Affirming, fully welcoming LGBTQ+ people into the life and leadership of the church, and has long affirmed a Just Peace commitment — seeking to practice nonviolence, justice, reconciliation, and care for our neighbors both locally and globally.
Worship at FCCSB
Our Sunday worship gatherings are rooted in a classic style of worship, while remaining spacious, progressive, and accessible. Worship often includes thoughtful preaching, prayer, silence, sacred music, scripture, communion, and reflective liturgy that invites people into both inner transformation and compassionate engagement with the world.
Music has long been a vital part of the life and spirit of FCCSB. Through choir, piano, organ, vocal leadership, and special musical offerings throughout the year, the congregation nurtures a rich tradition of sacred music that invites reflection, beauty, joy, and participation. We believe music can open spaces within us that words alone often cannot — connecting people to wonder, healing, memory, and shared belonging.
We honor the wisdom of the Christian tradition while remaining open to learning from science, psychology, interfaith dialogue, and the lived experiences of diverse communities. Whether someone has been part of church life for decades, is returning after a long absence, or is simply spiritually curious, we strive to create gatherings where people can breathe, reflect, connect, and belong. No matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!
